To kick-start the IMM Industry Insider series, we sit down with fashion and celeb stylist Gayle Rinkoff to talk style refinement, from wardrobe throwaways to fundamentals.
We've all been there, those mornings where outfit building seems an impossible task whilst your wardrobe sits bursting at the seams... and you’re STILL left fighting back the urge to head out the door in your pajamas. Rebuilding your wardrobe doesn't need to break the bank, it can mean re-imagining new ways-to-wear, ditching seasonal trends or simply making do and mending your old favorites.
A successful wardrobe clear out will not only add hours to your day, but free up your mind to think about bigger life goals. Spanning more than 20 years in the industry, fashion and celebrity stylist
Gayle Rinkoff counts down her top 10 tips for giving your wardrobe that all needed detox.
1. Have you worn it in the last year? If not, seriously consider passing it on. Either charity, ebay, a friend, relative. Be ruthless here.
2. Do you have lots of clothes in your wardrobe that you are hoping to fit into one day? If so, its time for them to go. You get to a certain age where you should be confident with your body and size/shape.
3. Do you shop ‘the trends’? If so, it more than likely that these items will be out of date. Out of trend. Again, time for them to go.
4. Hold on to classics, well-tailored pieces, items that work with anything.
5. Do a lot of trying on when you are having a clear out. Do you still love those high-waisted red trousers? Do you need 20 pairs of Topshop jeans? etc
6. Organise your wardrobe so it works for you. Do you go to the gym every morning, do a school run then off to work? Do you go out that often? Very often people have all their dressy stuff taking up the most space but is worn the least amount.
7. Re sell your unwanted items. It’s a good way to claw back some money and invest in some new pieces.
8. Give some pieces to charity. Trust me, you will feel good for it.
9. Find a good tailor/seamstress. So many people have items they once loved but now look shabby, have holes in, need hemming. A good tailor can breathe new life into old favourites.
10. You should be left with a wardrobe full of clothes that you love and enjoy wearing. And you may just think twice about buying those black jeans again as you know you already have 3 pairs.
Et voila! A refined wardrobe that reflects YOUR style... those slow morning will be a thing of the past - we promise!
