#INDUSTRY NEWS: VOGUE ON DIVERSITY IN 2019
Inclusivity: the practice or policy of including people who might otherwise be excluded or marginalized, such as those who have physical or mental disabilities and members of minority groups.
It’s 2019 and the fashion industry has made leaps and bounds with being more inclusive although we still have a long way to go. It’s important to remember that inclusiveness regards all minority groups, not just one avenue. With access to the internet and heap loads of information, today there isn't a corner for ignorance to hide in and with Gen Z at the forefront of the digital age its become more important than ever to see themselves represented in the media that they are fed.
Although there have been moves towards inclusivity over the last few years (the autumn/winter 2015 runways, for instance, were 80 percent white), much more remains to be done.
The beauty of individuality is that we all have something different to bring to the table & we’re finally in a time where that is celebrated and loved for our differences. It’s important to remember that we still have a way to go with becoming completely inclusive with a way to go still but steps forward are being made with models of all minorities being represented in mainstream fashion & brands such as Vogue, ASOS, Lazy Oaf, etc.
“The Fashion Spot”’s most recent runway diversity report found that just 38.8 percent of models cast in New York, London, Milan, and Paris were non-white. Meanwhile, diversity in all its other forms – including the participation of older, plus-size, transgender and non-binary models, as well as those with disabilities – is still rare. Plus-size models accounted for just 0.69 percent of those who walked the runways last season, while only 0.77 percent were openly transgender women and non-binary models."
Here at IMM, we pride ourselves on being inclusiveness in all avenues, meet our models making waves:
